Dr. Jeff Buckley, PhD

Researcher in Technology & Engineering Education

Welcome

Introduction

I received my B.Tech.(Ed.) in Materials and Architectural Technology with Concurrent Teacher Education from the University of Limerick, Ireland, in 2014. I then completed a PhD in Education and Communication in the Technological Sciences from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, in 2018. My thesis is available here. Following this, I undertook postdoctoral research at both KTH and Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland, where I examined stereotypes and conceptions that secondary school and undergraduate students held of engineers and engineering.

Currently I am a Lecturer in Research Pedagogy at Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest. I am a member of the Technology Education Research Group (TERG) in Ireland and the Engineering Education for Society research group at KTH. I am the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Technology and Design Education, and serve of the Editorial Boards of Educational Psychology Review, Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, the European Journal of Engineering Education, SN Social Sciences, and The Educational and Developmental Psychologist. I have also guest edited special issues of the European Journal of Engineering Education, Educational Sciences, and Frontiers in Education.

Research Interests

Generally, I conduct research in teaching, learning and assessment in technology and engineering education. I am particularly interested in how people learn, and specifically how individual differences in cognitive abilities, mainly spatial ability, affect peoples capacity to process different types of information. I also conduct research in education assessment where my focus is on the use of comparative judgement in the assessment of designerly activity. In addition to this, I am interested in meta-research with particular emphasis on the transparency and replicability of research in technology and engineering education and on the research methods which are used in these fields.
